ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: ELLA MORTON
This weekend we had the pleasure of receiving a visit from Ella Morton: a Canadian photographer and filmmaker who lives in Tkarón:to/Toronto, on the land of the Mississaugas of the Credit, Anishinabeg, Chippewa, Haudenoshaunee, and Wendat peoples.
She works with the chemical processes of analog photography. Her practice, based on expeditions in nature, has taken her to art residencies and projects in Canada, Scandinavia, and Antarctica. Working mainly with photography and video, she uses experimental analog processes to capture the sublime and fragile qualities of remote landscapes. Reflecting on how the medium of photography is changing in the digital age, her goal is to discover how photographs can show more than a simple description of reality, and how the alchemy of analog techniques can be reinvented today to tell deeper stories within the images.
“The Dissolving Landscape” (2016-2021) is a series of experimental analog photographs that examine climate change in the landscapes of Canada and Northern Europe. The project poses the question: what are we losing, in terms of our spiritual connection to the land, as the climate rapidly changes? I hope you return to La Casa Cuadrada, Ella, so we can see each other again and see more of your work and of you! Want to see more of Ella?
